Trance munchkin Ferry Corsten teams up with eighties vocalist Howard Jones for this single taken from the Dutch DJ star’s L.E.F. album Into The Dark. He beefs it up for the clubs with his own ‘Ferry Fix’ as well as a remix by the absurdly talented youngster from the States Casey Keyworth aka Breakfast.
The storming Ferry Fix charges forward on a guitar-riffing bassline and hypnotic trance melodies. Jones’ vocals, treated to fit the production well, are excellent with well-written, moving lyrics that are led to soaring heights by emotive trance leads. Topped off by a searing and powerful breakdown, this is Corsten in peak form, a production of great character that pushes all the right buttons to move both your heart and your feet. Matching this is a tough feat, but the magnificent Breakfast does just that. Drenched in his usual layers of fuzz, it takes a while to get going, but it is worth the wait. He uses the vocal superbly, chopped up in the right places while distorted leads display all the unique hallmarks of a Breakfast production. An epic breakdown with a devastating euphoric melody is the icing on the cake. Superb! Also included is the original album version, a gorgeous downtempo eighties influenced electro beauty which showcase the heartbreaking fragility of Howard Jones’ vocals to maximum goosebump raising effect.
Conclusion: What a scorching release from Ferry Corsten that shows he still has his studio magic in spades. Continuining his fusion of electro and trance, with a particularly eighties flavour, Howard Jones’ vocals are as powerful and moving as ever and fit each version well. Of the remixes it is hard to pick a favourite but I think the power and energy of Ferry’s Fix just edges it for me. Breakfast’s individual style shines through on his remix and can only enhance his reputation – more than worth a spin. All in all, top, top release! 9.5/10
